Background and Context of Debate:

Approximately 500 million to 1.8 billion people speak English globally. It is the official language in 53 states all over the world, it is the official language of the United Nations, European Union, NAFTA, NATO and many other international organizations and bodies.

This begs the question: Would it be a good idea to establish English as the global language? Should everyone be able to communicate in English, should it become superior to other languages?

Is there a factor that makes English superior to other languages?

Yes

No

  • In principle, no language is ever superior to the other. No matter how many people speak English all aroung the globe, this does not make it anyhow "better". All languages, just like cultures, are of the same value.
