Does immigration have a net positive effect on the United States?

Background and Context of Debate:

This debate considers both legal and illegal immigration to the United States.

Immigration has shaped life in the United States since its beginning. As of 2006, the United States accepts more legal immigrants as permanent residents than all other countries in the world combined. The economic, social, and political aspects of immigration have caused controversy regarding ethnicity, economic benefits, jobs for non-immigrants, settlement patterns, impact on upward social mobility, crime, and voting behavior.

The illegal immigrant population of the United States in 2008 was estimated by the Center for Immigration Studies to be about 11 million people. The USA population in 2009 was 307,006,55 (Source: U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division). This results in 3.58 illegal immigrants per every 100 citizens.

Is immigration good for the economy?

According to James Smith, a senior economist at Santa Monica-based RAND Corporation and lead author of the United States National Research Council's study "The New Americans: Economic, Demographic, and Fiscal Effects of Immigration", immigrants contribute as much as $10 billion to the U.S. economy each year.

Can the USA assimilate more than 11 million illegal immigrants?

  • Assimilation difficulty isn't caused by paperwork. Assimilation problems come about with cultural and language differences.

  • When 3.5 out of 100 of your citizens have no loyalty to your country, they are sending some of their money to another country, they are living in the shadows, it is not a good situation.
