Was the 1969 moon landing faked?

Background and context

A controversy exists as to whether man really did land on the moon in 1969 with Neil Armstrong, Michael Colins & Buzz Aldin. Some skeptics say the whole thing was faked and recorded in a studio. Part of the argument is that, following the President's 1961 promise to go to the moon, taxpayers had payed for space travel R and D for some time, and by 1969 the US did not want to disappoint America before the decade was over.

Some scientists have "proven wrong" the arguments of some skeptic's arguments but there is still doubt surrounding this issue.

Does the fact that there were no stars in the background mean the 1969 moon landing may have been faked?

[Add New]

Yes

  • The view into space is very similar to he view into the sky from Earth. There are planets and stars in the sky on the moon, and if they weren't in the footage taken (which there wasn't) then they probably recorded the whole thing in a studio. There were no stars put in because they were worried people might be skeptical about the constellations and therefore left them out. They knew if anyone questioned that moved they would have an excuse (given in the "no" section of this article).
[Add New]

No

  • The astronauts had very bright spacesuits. With the exposure of the camera used for the moon landing, it shows the bright spacesuits and moon surface, and these were too bright for the stars in the background to be seen.
  • The glare of the Sun works exactly the same way on the Moon as it does on the Earth, or in orbit close to Earth.
All the lunar landings occurred on the daylight side of the Moon. With the Sun above them, it would be impossible for them to see any stars in the sky. The same holds true in low-Earth orbit from the Space Shuttle or the Space Station. Pictures in low-Earth orbit taken on the daylight side of Earth never feature stars, either. The idea that stars could possibly be seen in space while the Sun is in the sky is the product of works of fiction.

The flag was waving and rippling: Does this prove the moon landing was a hoax?

[Add New]

Yes

  • There is no wind on the moon. Because there is no wind on the moon, it would not have been possible for the flag to wave like it did. It must have been recorded in a studio with a breeze flowing.
[Add New]

No

  • There is a scientific explanation for what happened. Scientists have proven scientifically that even though there is no wind on the moon, it is still possible for the flag to look like it is blowing in the breeze, because of the way Buzz Aldrin planted the flag. In addition, mere inertia could make the flag move during its deployment. The only way the flag could not wave during deployment is if it were a rigid object, and not cloth.
There is no video of the flag waving when it is at rest. Once gravity took over and the pole it was on was still, it became inert. It only moved again during launch, when the ignition blast and exhaust of the ascent stage's rocket interacted with the flag.
  • Newton's laws apply here. The flag was rippling because when the astronaut put the flag in, he might have pushed it a bit and because of the law of action and reaction (3rd Newton's law) and law of inertia (1st Newton's law), it continued to ripple.

Is it possible for moon landings to be faked without anyone knowing or revealing the fact that it was a "hoax"?

[Add New]

Yes

  • It is such a big secret; no-one would give it away. Nobody would give away a secret like one that states that nobody has ever really been to space, it would be such a big deal. This leads me to the main point...
  • Anyone who knew about the secret wouldn't tell, probably because of the fear of getting in trouble if they did. Nobody who would have pretended to go to space or was part of the faked studio recording would dare tell a secret like that. It would really spoil astronauts' reputations and destroy the whole prospect of man being able to go into space. No one would spoil a secret like that and would most likely be in the fear of NASA getting humiliated and shamed by the media.
It is probably better that, if the 1969 moon landing really was faked, nobody found out because it would really spoil the spirit of the whole world about space travel and technology.
  • No-one has been to the moon for over 36 years. Yes, it is true, not one person has "been to the moon" for over 36 years. If they were supposedly able to in 1969 and 1971, why haven't they recently? Man was said to have been twice in 1969 and once more in 1972. Since then, there have been no more missions to the moon. I think that the reason for this is that NASA are scared of the public finding out that the moon landing was faked and if anyone caught them filming a pretend Apollo mission in a studio the world would find out and that would be bad for everyone (except the media).

No

  • Since so many astronauts have been into space, it would be impossible for all of them to keep a secret like that. Many, many hundreds of astronauts have been fortunate enough to have been into space and experience the journey for themselves. As well as those people, thousands of people work on space missions. If space exploration was fake, the reality is that hundreds of thousands of people would know, and therefore the world would find out eventually. It is impossible for that many people to know that all space exploration was faked and for those people to all keep it a secret.
  • Millions of people have seen manned space launches. The manned launches of the Apollo program, as well as Projects Mercury and Gemini before and the earlier launches of the Space Shuttle, were popular attractions, drawing hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people to Cape Canaveral for each one. To this day, people still come to Cape Canaveral to witness Space Shuttle launches when they happen.
  • The Nixon Administration was incapable of keeping secrets this grandiose. The Government of the United States has a hard time keeping secrets. This was particularly true during the Administration of Richard Nixon. From the Pentagon Papers to the Watergate scandal, many things had been leaked out to the public. If the Moon landings had been faked, then certainly there would be some Earth-bound evidence, such as pieces of the supposed set, to cast true doubt on the authenticity of the moon landings. In addition, certainly somebody within the Government could have used the faked landings against Nixon during the aforementioned Watergate scandal to further discredit him during his Administration's decline. Congress would have loved to have known that they wasted tens of billions of dollars on a lie.

Is all the evidence brought back from the moon fake?

[Add New]

Yes

  • Nobody has ever proven the "space rocks" were from space. Many things have been supposedly brought back from the moon, but nobody has proven that they really were from space. Things like moon rocks could be anything, but most people just believe they were from the moon. No scientific investigations have been done to see if the rock really was from the moon and it could have been picked up off the ground and claimed to be from the moon. That kind of hoax is easy to conduct and people just believe what they hear about "moon rocks" without thinking that it might not really be from the moon.
[Add New]

No

  • You wouldn't go to the moon and bring back an Earth rock. There is enough evidence to prove that man really did go to the moon. Since Neil Armstrong really did go to the moon, he would obviously bring back genuine evidence and rocks. He would not go to the moon and bring back a rock from Earth. Obviously he would bring back the real deal and genuine items; there is an expectation to and he may as well since he went to the moon anyway.
  • There is no proof that the rocks purported to have been returned from the Moon are really Earth-bound rocks. No one has ever attempted to prove that rock samples returned from the Moon are really from the Earth. There is no evidence to suggest that these rocks are from the Earth, nor where on Earth they really came from. Considering many of the samples are now on public display, it would not be difficult to compare Moon rocks to Earth rocks.
In contrast, prominent geologists have studied these rocks and determined that many of the types of rock that have been returned are of forms that do not exist naturally on Earth. There have been no attempts made to rebutt these claims.

Other Evidence: Is there any other evidence to back these sides?

[Add New]

Yes

  • The Nixon Government didn't want to disappoint taxpayers.
    • The US President in 1961 promised that Americans would be on the moon by the end of the decade, trying to keep up with Russian technology. It is interesting how this only happened in the second half of the last year promised. The US Government had spent a lot of money trying to get man into space. Time was running short and the Government didn't want to disappoint taxpayers. In desperation, NASA simply recorded the moon landing in a studio to stick to the Government's promise.
[Add New]

No

  • The landing sites can be viewed from space by Moon-orbiting spacecraft. The landing sites themselves can be viewed and photographed by spacecraft in lunar orbit. In fact, in 1994, the Clementine lunar orbiter photographed the landing site of Apollo 15. In 2001, scientists at Brown University in Rhode Island compared the photographs of the Apollo 15 landing site from Clementine to pictures taken during the Apollo 15 mission from the Endeavour command module. The scientists were able to locate the lander, at the exact point on the lunar surface delimited by NASA during the mission.
