Can vigilantism ever be justified?

Background and context

In cases where the law and order of a country have broken down completely, vigilante groups are often formed and the law is taken into the hands of the people. Is this justified?

Will Vigilanteism restore law and order?

[Add New]

Yes

  • A coherent plan is necessary. It depends, but it can if the vigilantes have a plan, and are organised enough to target the areas and people that are causing the damage. Simply allowing widespread and uncontrolled violence will not solve anything.
  • Vigilanteism is necessary to fulfill punishment/justice. Hugo Grotius, famous 17th century Dutch jurist: "[P]unishment is necessary 'to defend the honor or the authority of him who was hurt by the offence so that the failure to punish may not cause his degradation.’"[1]

No

  • Vigilanteism merely instigates chaos. Vigilanteism simply causes more problems and will not fix the original problem. One should restore law and order rather than implementing disorder.
