Is the US special relationship with Israel justified, or should it be normalized?

Background and context

Special relationships between the U.S and Israel has started since the moment of Israel's birth. Throughout history, the U.S and Israel helped each other such as supplying weapons to each other. The U.S were one of the first countries to recognize and help Israel and that good relationship has been continued. However, there is recent public debate in the U.S whether the special relationship is good for the U.S and Israel.

Does the special relationship help both nations politically?

[Add New]

Pro

  • The US ought to support the lone democracy in the Middle East. As the only democracy in the Middle East, it is extremely important that the US maintain a special relationship with Israel.
  • The US-Israel relationship strengthens US presence in the Middle East.

Con

  • Special relations with Israel undermine US as neutral arbiter. The United States has an important role in the Middle East of a neutral arbiter, particularly when it comes to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This role is undermined by the United States' special relationship with Israel, and this loses the United States critical credibility with others states in the region who perceive the US as being biased against Muslim countries in the Middle East.
