Debate: Truthers vs birthers

From Debatepedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Background and context

This debate assumes that the conspiracies advocated by "birthers" (Obama faked his birth certificate and is not a natural born citizen) and the "truthers" (the U.S. gov't orchestrated 9/11) are both false. This debate is about which conspiracy theory is more plausible.

Does the number of conspirators required for each conspiracy make either one more plausible?

Yes. Only a few supporters and lawyers would be needed for Obama to cover the fact that he was not a born in Hawaii. On the other hand, the 9/11 conspiracy movement requires a plethora of federal agencies and executives planning and covering up a massive large scale military action.

No. While it may be true that the number of conspirators required for the initial cover up may have been less, this argument fails to take into consideration the number of people that would have been kept silent after Obama's birth. Moreover, the number of conspirators by itself does not make a theory plausible. The underlying motivation for the theory is more important.

Is the underlying rationale for the birthers' theory plausible?

Yes. Politicians lie all the time to advance their careers. If Obama knew he wasn't an American citizen by birth and he wanted to eventually become president, it makes sense for him to lie and cover it up.

No. It simply makes no sense for Obama's mother to fly to Kenya for Obama to be born in an inferior hospital only to fly back to Hawaii later on. Moreover, there is no reason for her to place false newspaper articles in a local Hawaiian paper or to cover up the paper trail.

Is there historical precedent for the birther conspiracy?

Yes. Politicians try to cover up and lie about things all the time.

No. No other U.S. president has covered up evidence regarding whether he was born in the United States.
