This House believes that smaller schools are better than larger schools

Background

There are many different school sizes out there. For high schools, they can range from 40 people per grade to 1,000. The question is whether smaller are better than bigger schools, for learning, for teachers, for social interactions, for job-preparation, for economics, and for things like administrative and school-board efficiencies.

Do you have better chance of getting a job after going to a smaller school?

[Add New]

Yes

  • Yes because you would be more focussed on a certain thing instead of changing and not being as good at that certain thing.
[Add New]

Con

  • No, because in a larger school you would know more people and they would have lots of different job ideas and you may hear something you haven't thought of and then you will be able to get a good job.

Are there better teachers in smaller schools?

[Add New]

Yes

Because I looked up some research done by the NCEF and there is mounting evidence of smaller schools providing higher quality education.

[Add New]

No

you would not have better teachers in a smaller school because three are only a few teachers and one or two of them might be bad and then you wouldn't learn as much for the whole year and if you keep getting bad teachers than you won't end up learning much at all. Where as in a bigger school you are bound to get a good teacher at some point because there a so many and also you probably will get some one who specializes in certain areas so then all your education is boosted.

Are you safer in a smaller school?...

No Background Information
END
[Add New]

Yes

because you have much closer friends that you have got to know better and they can help you where as if you were in a larger school than you may have no friends and no one to help you if you are picked on.

[Add New]

No

If you were in a larger school you wouldn't get picked on because there would be more people to support you and more teachers so it would be harder for bullies to hurt or pick on you. Also if you are in a smaller school you can get picked on easier because a bully can corner you a lot easier with less people around. With out anyone even realising.

Do you learn more in small schools?

[Add New]

Yes

Yes, because if you are in a small school the teacher can pay more attention and help each individual more because there a only a few people to worry about instead of a whole class.

[Add New]

No

No because in large schools there are more students to help explain things if the teacher can not make it clear enough for some just today My friend and I taught the grade something in decimals that some students didn't understand.

Do smaller schools perform better in tests?

[Add New]

Yes

Yes, because they are under less pressure with their peers and their is not as much competition between the students and that will stop a lot of errors that can be because of pressure and not the students ability. Also in bigger schools there are a few people who are really good at each subject and as they flip pages students become worried about time and try to hurry to catch up this also forces errors the student may have not made if he/she wasn't under that pressure.

[Add New]

No

On the Myschool Website I saw that bigger schools did better than smaller schools one of the bigger schools had all on average or above which is great but smaller schools had some on average and some below average. I think this is because bigger schools have more people and therefore if quite a few students do well it brings the average up and with so many people who are just getting normal it stays around the same.

Do you make more friends in smaller schools?

[Add New]

Yes

Yes, Because you get to know your class mates better as you go through all your schooling with them where as in larger schools you change grades every year and do not get the opportunity to form close bonds as well as you do in smaller schools.

[Add New]

No

No, because at a smaller school there are not many people and it is more likely for you to have no friends because there are less people. Also if you join a smaller school half way through the year then the existing group may not accept the newcomer. Then you will have no friends. Where as in a larger school there are more people and a better chance of you meeting new people so each year you get new friends as well as the old ones so you have heaps of friends to play with! Also if you come to the school half way through the year then it would still be easy to get friends because usually at least one group will me happy to let you join. But in smaller schools there may only be 1 group so if you are rejected then you will have no friends.
