Debate: Background checks for gun purchases in the US
From Debatepedia
[Edit] Should there be background checks for gun purchases in the United States? |
[Edit] Background and contextIn the United States, there is a very strong gun culture and industry, due in large part to the Second Amendment in the United States Constitution. For this reason, guns are widely owned by US citizens, which many have argued is the cause of significant gun violence in the United States as compared to other countries. This has contributed to concerns surrounding the ease of purchasing weapons. Many argue that background checks should be required for all individuals that are seeking to purchase a gun. This would establish whether the individual has a record of criminal activity, and whether their ownership of a weapon poses a significant risk to public safety. Yet, many oppose this on the grounds that it infringes on the Constitutional right to bear arms. |
