Should income taxes be abolished?

Background and context

A significant movement, mainly in conservative circles, has developed around the idea of abolishing income taxes, and relying instead, on such taxes as sales taxes. Ron Paul, a US Congressman and 2008 Republican presidential candidate, has been, for example, a staunch advocate of such an idea.
